Accesskey for Screen Readers (or not)
Despite having been proved not to be worth it in an anecdotal study entitled Using Accesskeys is it worth it?, it seems accesskeys are on the rise as more and more web developers jump on the Web Accessibility bandwagon.
So just in case you were wondering which keys to assign to which page/content I give you the:
UK Government recommendation for access keys:
- S – Skip navigation
- 1 – Home page
- 2 – What’s new
- 3 – Site map
- 4 – Search
- 5 – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- 6 – Help
- 7 – Complaints procedure
- 8 – Terms and conditions
- 9 – Feedback form
- 0 – Access key details
And you add them to your pages like this:
<a href="http://example.com/" accesskey="1" >Home Page</a>
