How to Create an SVG for the Web

  1. Fire up Adobe Illustrator and open your AI file
  2. Make sure you only had whole shapes by selecting a path and adding/removing overlaying paths as appropriate
  3. Create a compound path (cmd+8) for each path with differing colours
  4. Export the artboard (cmd+alt+e)
  5. Check the resulting SVG file in a text editor; if all you see are a small number of paths then you're onto a winner
